Lal Chowk has historical importance in State politics. The first Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru, along with former Chief Minister and founder of National Conference, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, addressed joint gathering here in 1947 and 1948. It is here where Abdullah recited a Persian couplet announcing his un-separable friendship with Nehru: “I became you and You became I; so none can say we are separate.”

He stayed in the shop for about 5 minutes before heading towards Lal Chowk. The Home Minister also purchased fruits from Hari Singh High Street before heading for Sangarmal Shopping Complex where he had ice-cream.
