JAMMU, Mar 9: Providing much needed studio as well as interactive space to young local sculptors, a six-day Terracotta Sculpture camp was opened at the Blue River Ceramics Studio in collaboration with Vihan Art Foundation, here today.
The camp was inaugurated by Balwant Thakur, Regional Director, ICCR, Jammu, while Suman Gupta, well known painter and the organizing spirit behind the camp, was also present on the occasion along with number of senior artists and members of the civil society.
The participating artists who all are trained in technique of terracotta in the leading art colleges and studios in the country are Vikas Khajuria, Masters in Visual Arts (MVA), Naresh Kumar (MFA) Chandigarh, Jasleen Singh (MVA) Baroda, Shoba Thakur (MFA), Abinash Kumar (MFA), Reecha Gupta (BFA), Jyoti Gupta (LLB), Pottery Course From Andretta (Blue Pottery), Himachal Pradesh, Namrata Mohan (MBA) Delhi, Blue Pottery.
Speaking on the occasion, Balwant Thakur said that it is matter of pride that today Jammu is nationally and internationally well known for creative excellence of local visual artists. He said ICCR’s Jammu office is in the process of diversifying its activities and along with performing arts we shall also showcase the works of leading regional visual artists and literary personalities.
Vikas Khajuria, the camp co-coordinator, said that Jammu has an ancient tradition of terracotta sculptures in the form of terracotta art of Ambaran. Till 1947, rural pockets like that of Cherrayi-Muttal were famous centers of ceramics production. The terracotta sculpture camp is a continuation of old artistic legacy which will find expression in form of creative sculptures that would be put on show at Kala Kendra in near future.
Speaking to Excelsior, young sculptors showed their happiness for the opportunity to work at Blue River Ceramics Studio which has all basic facilities like mechanized potter’s wheels along with much need furnace and other equipment.
