UDHAMPUR, Aug 30: Six villages in Panchayat Darsu sans safe drinking water facility as the only water supply project in this area is lying defunct without commissioning.
These villages, namely Darsu, Jaid, Guddar, Kathil, Baghin, Baglian, Nadenal and Sangil comprise 1500 households and around 9000 population.
These villages  depend  on natural resources  of water  but  in  summer season,  it’s hard to find the  drinking water from  these resources, said Sham Lal, a local.
He disclosed that the Government had approved a water project for Darsu Panchayet and Rs 2.75 corer were sanctioned for the same. Despite incurring such a huge amount, the   project was not commissioned and is lying in shambles now.  In the recent flash floods, some water pipes of this project got washed away while the pump is lying defunct.
Villagers alleged that they met the district administration several times over the issue but only assurances were made. The villagers have appealed to the concerned department and District administration to start this Project as soon as possible to solve water crisis.
Xen PHE Division Udhampur   Ashwani Kumar Anand said that this particular scheme was started in the year 2006-2007 under Accelerated Rural Water Supply Scheme Programme (ARWSP).  Later this project was switched over to (NRDWP) National Rural Development Water Supply Programme. Though the project is almost complete,   some land dispute and poor funding are delaying its commissioning, he added.
