SKIMS Bemina faces shortage of drugs

SRINAGAR, July 6: The SKIMS Medical College Bemina is facing shortage of medicines and other necessary aids in its emergency section, giving a tough time to the attendants who are visiting there.
The non-availability of certain medicines is forcing patients to buy them from the market in the cases of emergency. The situation remained same for the last more than one week.
The attendants of the patients said that they had to buy suture materials and a few medicines from the market.
They complained that while they were made to buy suture materials from the market, they also had to buy medication such as Lidocaine, also known as Lignocaine, is a medication used to numb tissue in a specific area and even disinfectant called Betadine.
“My son had to undergo surgery and I was asked to buy the suture material apart from other medication; I had no option but to buy these from the market,” attendant of a patient said, adding that even the antibiotics are not available here.
Another attendant of the patient at the hospital complained about the same, he said: “there is no one who seems to be listening to us, we are poor and that is because of that we come here; if we had money, do you think we would have come here.”
Medical Superintendent SKIMS Medical College Bemina Dr Shafa Deva told Excelsior that due to the time taken by the companies in replenishing the stock of medicines, it takes a while in keeping the stock up to the mark.
“They don’t have to buy things from the market, however, sometimes the companies that deal with the procurement of drugs take time. We are taking due care of patient needs,” she said.
The patients are also suffering due to the time that the hospital administration takes in replenishing the stock as the Medical Superintendent said they have placed an order to procure the medicines, but that is yet to come.
“We have placed an order for the medicines 15 days ago, it takes time and we are expecting the orders will be delivered in next few days,” she said.
