SKIMS conducts successful non-surgical TAVR

Srinagar, Jan 9: In a landmark achievement, Department of Cardiology SKIMS Soura successfully performed first ever non-surgical Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)on a female patient.
The SKIMS officials said that various concerned departments were involved in the planning and execution of the procedure. Those involved include Professor & Head, Dr Nisar A Tramboo, Dr. Mohammad Akbar, Professor Department of CVTS, Dr. Abdul Qayoom Lone , Professor Department Anaesthesiology & Critical Care, Dr. Naseer Ahmad Choh, Professor Department of Radiodiagnosis SKIMS.
The procedure was proctored by Dr. Ravinder Rao with Technical assistance from M/S Merill Life Sciences on a 65 year old female patient suffering from Critical Aortic Valve Stenosis with severe heart failure.
HoD Cardiology while divulging details about the procedure said that TAVR is a procedure of aortic valve replacement without open heart surgery using a minimally invasive technique in which a catheter is passed through the groin and aortic valve is replaced in short time. No ventilator is required after the procedure and patient recovers just after the procedure and is usually discharged on the second day.
Director SKIMS/EOSG, Prof. A.G.Ahangar congratulated the department for introducing this state of the art technology in Department of Cardiology SKIMS. He hoped that this will go a long way in improving health care facility for patients suffering from Critical Aortic Valve Stenosis with high surgical risk.
