SRINAGAR, Jan 1: SKIMS Soura today issued preventive measures to help people avoid an acute surge in respiratory illnesses during the extreme winter season in Kashmir.
The advisory, issued by the institute’s Department of Internal and Pulmonary Medicine, outlines guidelines to prevent the exacerbation of chronic obstructive airway diseases.
As per the advisory, people have been advised to wear multiple layers of clothing to trap heat and maintain body warmth.
It emphasizes staying indoors and limiting exposure to outdoor air, especially when temperatures drop below freezing.
The department has recommended avoiding overcrowded places unless necessary and keeping the nose and mouth covered while outdoors.
It also stresses the importance of maintaining hydration by consuming plenty of fluids.
Regular handwashing and avoiding touching the face, particularly the nose and mouth, have been highlighted as essential practices.
Engaging in indoor physical activity has been encouraged, as it helps maintain lung health by improving circulation and overall fitness.
The advisory strongly advises vaccination against flu and pneumonia, noting that it significantly reduces the risk of respiratory infections.
Additionally, people are urged to use prescribed medications, including inhalers, consistently and to follow their COPD action plans.
The advisory also warns against behaviors that could worsen respiratory conditions. “Smoking and exposure to smoke should be strictly avoided,” it States.
People are cautioned against exposing themselves to cold air without adequate protection and advised not to skip prescribed medications or forget to carry a rescue inhaler if needed.
