Srinagar, Dec 23: SKIMS Soura has performed 285 kidney transplants over the past seven years, with its Department of Urology and Kidney Transplant Unit incorporating the latest techniques for enhanced patient care.
In this regard, the institute held a grand round presentation to share its 25-year experience in renal transplantation at SKIMS.
Recent data showcasing 285 successful kidney transplants performed in the last seven years was presented during the event.
Director SKIMS, Prof. Mohd. Ashraf Ganie, congratulated the department for successfully leading the Renal Transplantation Program with cutting-edge techniques and outstanding results.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to further enhancing these services.
“KTU SKIMS, a leading renal transplant center in North India, is significantly benefiting patients with chronic kidney diseases and setting new benchmarks in transplantation,” he said.
Prof. and Head of the Department of Urology & KTU SKIMS highlighted the department’s journey, noting that the Renal Transplant Program began in 1999 as a modest initiative and has since evolved into a major success.
Over the past decade, the program has operated consistently, supported by the establishment of a state-of-the-art Kidney Transplant Unit. Till date, more than 750 renal transplants have been successfully performed.
“The incorporation of the latest techniques has not only enhanced performance and patient satisfaction but has also placed the department on the global map for excellence in renal transplantation,” he said.
Experts noted that the introduction of swap transplants is shaping the future of renal transplantation.
Recently, two swap transplants involving two donor-recipient pairs were conducted. “This approach addresses the challenge of limited donor availability, a critical issue in the field.”
“Microsurgical anastomosis for small renal arteries using magnification and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy are among the latest advancements adopted to improve outcomes,” they added.
Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy offers several advantages, including shorter hospital stays, smaller incisions, less handling of the kidney, and better arterial and venous lengths, all contributing to improved results.
Prof. Arif Hamid, HoD Urology & KTU, acknowledged the pivotal role of former HoD Urology, Prof. Salim Wani, describing him as a pioneer in establishing the Renal Transplant Program at SKIMS.
