SEOUL, Dec 25 : South Korea has officially become a country with a “super-aged society,” with over 20% of its population now older than 65, the Yonhap news agency has reported, citing the country’s Interior Ministry.
The ministry said that the number of South Koreans older than 65 currently stands at 10.24 million, or 20% of the country’s total population of 51.22 million.
As of Monday, the number of South Koreans aged 65 or older stood at 10.24 million, accounting for 20.0 percent of the country’s total population of 51.22 million, according to the ministry.
The age group of people older than 65 in South Korea gradually increased over the years from 10%, or 4.94 million, in 2008 to over 15% in 2019 and then to 19.05% in early 2024.
According to the UN, the countries where more than 7% of people are older than 65 are “aging societies.” Those with over 14% of people of this age group are considered “aged societies.” Finally, the nations with more than 20% of their population older than 65 are classified as “super-aged societies.”
