JAMMU, Aug 22: Nationwide week long Parthenium awareness campaign of SKUAST-Jammu culminated at Village Marh Bagh, Jammu with an exhaustive interactive programme held with school children, teachers, farmers and line department officers in the school premises of the village.
The event was held on behalf of Directorate of Weed Science Research (ICAR), Jabalpur and “Division of Agronomy of SKUAST-Jammu.
During the interactive sessions, the stakeholders were educated about the abuses of this dreadful and horrible weed that follows no climatic and edaphic boundaries occupying an area of more than 35 million hectares in the country. Various preventive quarantine measures, eradication, chemical control and biological management strategies were advocated to the stakeholders at length besides acquainting the farmers and students about the latest know-how for compost making techniques from Parthenium (Congress Grass)–the only beneficial aspect of this growing hazard.
About 200 maxican beetle, Zygogramma bicolorata adults were released by S Harman Singh, Panch of the village for encouraging bio-control of this horrific weed. Some samples of effective herbicides were also distributed amongst the farming community.
