SKUAST-J organizes technology awareness prog for dairy farmers

REASI, Aug 14: SKUAST Jammu organized technology awareness-cum-demonstration programmes on “Management of Production Diseases in Livestock” at Reasi, KVK and Kalakote in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry.
J&K State Council for Science and Technology sponsored the programme in which 180 dairy farmers participated. A team of scientists from Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & A H interacted with the farmers. Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Rajouri and Reasi also participated in the programmes.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr M S Bhadwal, Associate Dean, said that the sole purpose of the programme is to disseminate the latest technologies related to livestock rearing and health management at farmers door step.
Dr Rajiv Singh, Professor and Head, Division of Veterinary Medicine, informed that livestock reared in the hills are generally fed variable quantity of low quality feed resources like local grasses, tree leaves, wheat straw, rice straw, maize stalk which are characteristically low in fermentable nitrogen, mineral, and readily available carbohydrate. “These deficiencies result in low animal growth, poor reproduction, long calving interval, and unthrifty condition. Developing alternate feeding strategies for ruminant production based on agro-industrial wastes is, therefore, of prime importance. A technology like urea molasses multinutrient blocks (UMMB) prepared from locally available agro-industrial by-products has been adoptable feed supplement which improves nutritional status of animals thereby health and production,” he explained
Farmers were provided practical demonstration on preparation of UMMB so that they may take undertake this activity as entrepreneurship programme to earn their livelihood. Dr Utsav Sharma, Associate Professor and Head, Division of Veterinary Gynecology briefed farmers about the reproductive problems of livestock and their management.
Dr Ismial, CAHO, Rajouri and Dr Shashi Bhushan, CAHO, Reasi, highlighted the services provided by the department for the welfare of dairy farmers.
Dr Mandeep Azad emphasized upon the need to establish backyard poultry units for sustainable growth. Dr Banarsi, PC, KVK (Reasi) insisted upon the farmers to develop linkages with the scientists for quick flow of latest technologies.
Farmers were provided a kit comprising of Urea mollases multinutrient blocks, area specific mineral mixture and dewormers.
