SKUAST-J to work on bio-prospection of Timru, its GI tagging

JAMMU, May 8: Director Research SKUAST-Jammu Dr R K. Samnotra today issued directions to the concerned scientists of the university to initiate work on important magical plant Zanthoxylum armatum, locally known as Timru.
Timru is a perfect example of plant defence mechanism due to its antixenosis / antibiosis properties as the whole plant including leaves, stem, bark, fruits, seeds have been used in several indigenous medicinal practices in both traditional and Ayurvedic treatments for ages.
In a brainstorming session, held at Main Campus Chatha of SKUAST-Jammu, Director Research informed the house that the plant has been reported from foot, mid and high hills of Jammu and Kashmir and is widely relished in the household of Jammu region.
He stressed that there is need to initiate work on bio-prospection of Timru and every effort should be made to nominate the Timru Chatni for GI tagging.
Nodal officer IPR Cell cum Coordinator School of Biotechnology Dr R K Salgotra, HoD Plant Pathology Dr Amrish Vaid, HoD Entomology Dr R K Gupta, HoD Agroforestry Dr Lalit Mohan Gupta, Comptroller SKUAST-J Madan Lal, Joint Comptroller SKUAST-J Sohan LaL Sharma, University Legal Advisor Atul Gupta and President-SKUAST-TAJ Vikas Sharma were present in the brainstorming session.
