JAMMU, July 6: The Division of Statistics and Computer Science is hosting a week-long training program on “Digital Literacy: Empowering Agricultural Students” from July 3 to 9, 2024, at SKUAST Jammu, in celebration of National Statistics Day (NSD-2024).
On the occasion, Prof B N Tripathi, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-Jammu and Prof Rajender Prasad, Director ICAR-IASRI signed MoU between SKUAST Jammu and ICAR-IASRI to enhance academic and research collaboration, particularly for the benefit of students and researchers.
In his address, Prof Tripathi emphasized the importance of using proper statistical procedures for scientific research. He highlighted the increasing volume of data collected in daily life and the necessity of statistical software for data processing, stressing the need for digital literacy to strengthen the agricultural system. He said that the digital literacy among students is not merely a skill but a gateway to transform the opportunities in the agricultural sector.
Prof Rajender Prasad, Director, ICAR-IASRI, New Delhi underscored the need for precise statistical tools to address future challenges in policy and planning at regional and national levels. He also discussed the vital role of digital tools in agriculture and delivered a special lecture.
Prof Rajinder Peshin, Director Education, SKUAST-Jammu, also addressed the participants, quoting Karl Pearson that: “Statistics is the grammar of Science.”
Earlier, Prof S E H Rizvi, Dean FBSc welcomed the dignitaries. Prof Manish Kr Sharma, Head and Course Director, presented the importance of the training program. Nineteen resource persons from various esteemed institutions, including IASRI, CCSHAU Hisar, IIT Kanpur, IIT Jammu, BITS Pilani, IIT Roorkee, University of Delhi, Central University Jammu, SKUAST Kashmir, and VIT-AP, will share their expertise on topics such as Chat GPT, R Software, Latex, Cyber Security, QTL mapping, SPSS, website design, AI and ML methods, blended learning, and many more.
The event was attended by prominent faculty members and resource persons, including Prof. Anil Sharma, Dean Faculty of Agriculture & Registrar, SKUAST-Jammu; Prof Sushil Sharma, Dean FoAE. The organizing team, including Dr. Anil Bhat, Dr Sunali Mahajan , Nishant Jasrotia others. Dr Subash Kashyap conducted proceedings and Prof Bupesh Kumar delivered vote of thanks.
