SKUAST-TAJ urges LG to enhance retirement age of varsity teachers

JAMMU, Aug 22: Teachers Association of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology, Jammu has appealed the Lt Governor J&K to enhance retirement age of the university teachers.
In a statement, President of SKUAST-TAJ, Vikas Sharma said that to retain the excellent human resource for better research and teaching outputs, the Union Territory Government should take immediate action with regard to approximately 1200 teachers of four Universities of the UT (SKUAST-J, SKUAST-K, JU, KU) and bring their superannuation age at par with those of teachers working in Central Universities as laid down by the UGC.
“The Central University of Kashmir and Central University of Jammu have 65 years age of superannuation for their teachers, since their inception and this is in tune with the recommendations of University Grant Commission (UGC). Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Jammu has also increased the superannuation age of their teachers to 65 years while the agenda item regarding enhancement in superannuation age has already been approved in the Council Meet of University of Jammu and University of Kashmir,” he added while justifying the demand.
Dr. Vikas also reminded that that superannuation age of teachers of universities in UTs with Legislation like Delhi & Pondicherry, has already been enhanced to 65 years. G B Pant University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Pantnagar and Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, have taken the lead in this regard and had fixed the age of superannuation as 65 in the year 2013, he added.
SKUAST-TAJ President appealed to the Lt Governor to consider the genuine demand put forth by the Association and said that it is very much essential to maintain high standards of teaching / research and retain highly experienced faculty which can be possible only by increasing retiring age of faculty that is fully equipped with research and teaching experience.
