COLOMBO, Dec 31: Sri Lankan police have arrested over 20,000 suspects in connection with drug-related offences and other criminal activities in a recently launched operation, the Public Security Ministry said on Sunday.
The ministry said in a statement that the police made the arrests in an operation launched on December 17 to curb drug trafficking and organised criminal activities.
The operation has reached its 14th day, and 20,797 suspects have been arrested by the police, the ministry said.
During the operation, the police seized 11.6 kg of heroin, 8.3 kg of crystal meth, 297 kg of cannabis, and many other drugs, the ministry said.
The police have also confiscated the properties of some of the suspects.
The ministry said the street value of the confiscated drugs and properties is worth over 558 million rupees (1.7 million U.S. dollars). (UNI)
