Srinagar, Apr 17: Srinagar City is on track to become garbage and dumpster-free as the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) adds 150 more C&T vehicles, launches its ground-breaking GIS-based and real-time GPS-monitored 100% door-to-door Segregated Waste Collection system, and begins the removal of dumpsters from the city.
The SMC announced a revised area and ward-wise deployment schedule for Garbage Collection Vehicles around the city today to ensure 100% collection of separated dry and wet waste.
It has also begun the process of eliminating dumpsters and bins from the city to establish a rubbish and dumpster-free environment.
“SMC has added more than 150 vehicles to its existing fleet, including 100 new light motor vehicles for door-to-door primary collection and roughly 50 new heavy motor vehicles for secondary transportation, including contemporary compactors,” PRO SMC said.
He said that this is the first major upgrade to Srinagar’s Solid Waste Management Infrastructure.
“GPS devices have been installed in all vehicles for real-time surveillance. To enable the efficient and timely waste collection, all areas and wards have been GIS mapped and geofenced down to the lane level,” he said, adding each vehicle’s service regions and households have been identified.
The Smart City project’s Integrated Solid Waste Management IT System will provide thorough monitoring and it contains capabilities such as live location tracking, route and time deviation notifications, grievance redressal, and quality assurance tools.
SMC said that the waste collection vehicles will visit every home and commercial enterprise, including shops, in Srinagar City and people will be required to pass over segregated rubbish to SMC garbage collection vehicles.
“SMC is closing down all waste vulnerable points as well as the locations where skips were previously positioned,” PRO said, noting it is now illegal to dispose of rubbish at such locations.
The general public and commercial entities have been asked to hand over rubbish to SMC vehicles and refrain from dumping it elsewhere.
The notification issued by Commissioner SMC, Athar Aamir Khan, also advises the general public that if the Garbage Collection van does not arrive at their home or business on time, the local ward-level officers will be contacted or the SMC’s control room will be notified.
The public announcement includes contact information for concerned ward-level officials as well as information about vehicles deployed in each area.
This is a significant step towards making Srinagar one of the cleanest cities in the country.
