SMC passes 2 resolutions to rename several city areas

Srinagar, Sept 20: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is going to rename several areas in Srinagar after veteran politicians and religious leaders as General Council passed two resolutions in its 14th meeting held today.
Two resolutions to rename Botshah Mohalla Chowk in Lal Bazar area as Peer Shafi Chowk and Chowdhary Bagh to Moti Mohalla as Shaheed Aga Syed Mehdi road have been passed unanimously, officials said.
It has been learned that the Council has decided to rename Botshah Mohalla Chowk and Chowdhary Bagh to Moti Mohalla in Srinagar city in memory of noted religious and political leaders.
General Council has also unanimously passed a resolution presented by Mayor Srinagar, Junaid Azim Mattu to rename Chowdhury Bagh to Moti Mohalla in Rainawari road as Shaheed Aga Syed Mehdi road to honour the noted religious and political leader Aga Syed Mehdi.
It is to be noted that Peer Mohammad Shafi was associated with the National Conference and also an ex-MLA from Zadibal. He was killed at his residence in Lal Bazar in August 1991.
Aga Syed Mehdi was also a prominent Kashmiri Shia leader and social activist who was killed in a massive IED blast on Kanihama-Magam road in Budgam district in 2000.
