SRINAGAR, Mar 29: In a shocking incident, the authorities at premier SMHS Hospital Srinagar here have allowed the supply of construction material to pass through ward number 11 without even shifting the patients or taking the necessary precautions.
A video-which showed the labourers carrying the construction material and passing through the ward-was widely shared on social media and it invited ridicule from the people who termed it a “sorry state of affairs”.
The clip shows the patients lying on their beds, doctors attending them and at the same time, labourers carrying bricks and other materials can also be seen passing through the pathway between the two rows of beds in the ward.
“There is some construction going on at the other end of the ward, but the construction material goes right through the ward only to pose risk to the patients who are undergoing treatment,” said Bashir Ahmad Wani, one of the attendants.
Another attendant said that it does not need rocket science to know that the movement of labourers carrying the construction material would be risky for the patients in the ward. “But they still did what they wanted to without caring enough for the patients,” he said.
The people on social media platforms also expressed their dismay and said that such a thing can only happen in Kashmir.
“It is such a disregard for human lives; those who allowed it to happen and those who did see it, but did not act, must be taken to task; they cannot be allowed to play with the lives of the patients for some construction,” said Arif Ahmad, a social media user.
As the video was widely shared, and ridiculed, the authorities were prompted to take note of the matter and do necessary corrections.
Medical Superintendent, SMHS, Dr Muzaffar Zargar told Excelsior that they have finalized the alternative arrangement in this regard. “It has been noted and we have already discussed with the concerned engineer some alternative arrangement, which has been finalized,” he said.
