JAMMU, June 18: Social Movement Party (SMP) asked the ST, SC and OBC Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to resign from the Assembly in protest against non-implementation of 27 per cent reservation in favour of OBCs and other issues or face consequences in the forthcoming elections.
Addressing a press conference, National Secretary General, SMP, Ashok Kumar Basotra demanded reservation in educational institutions, professional colleges and direct recruitment, promotions and backlong quota with respect to SCs, STs and OBCs in J&K and Centre.
He alleged that present coalition Government is working against the interests of the common masses as well as employees of the J&K and this act of the Government will be questioned by the common masses.
Basotra vouched all the SC, ST and OBC MLAs must resign in favour of OBCs, non-implementation of reservation in promotions and non-filing of backlog quota in favour of SCs, STs and OBCs of J&K or be prepared to face the consequences in all the forthcoming elections.
He raised the concern about the hue and cry of so called upper castes in India vis-à-vis J&K and agreed in principle that despite being not more than 9 per cent of the total population of India as well as J&K, they seem to be under represented in all the spheres of Government including administration, judiciary and media as well as educational institutions and professional colleges.
Basotra said that as SMP would come in power, it will abrogate the present system of reservation and will implement a new reservation system in favour of so called upper castes strictly as per their population percentage across India including J&K with a cap on these castes so that they should not cross the limit of their population percentage.
Among others present were Hem Raj Phonsa and Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah, social activists, Dayal Singh, National Vice President, SMP, Dheeraj Thapa, National Treasurer, SMP, Dr Jeet Raj Bazala, State President, SMP J&K, Ghulam Mohammad Bedar, Purshotam Kumar, Jai Paul and Dr Bodh Raj Bawa, State Vice Presidents, SMP J&K, Madhu Bala, State Secretary General, SMP J&K, etc.
