JAMMU, Apr 21: In continuation of its efforts to fight hearing loss, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) Narayana Super Speciality Hospital, Katra organized a hearing loss screening cum awareness camp at its Jammu OPD in Gandhi Nagar.
The aim of the camp was to spread awareness amongst masses about hearing loss, it’s debilitating effects and how it can actually not only affect the person but entire family.
Dr Rohan Gupta, Consultant ENT Surgeon at SMVD Narayana Super-Speciality Hospital offered his services for the camp and shared his opinion on subject which is very close to his heart. He shared that he has seen what timely treatment can do to change lives of children who have been diagnosed with severe – profound hearing loss. He said this can be congenital or can be acquired due to any accident or infection or continuous exposure to loud sounds.
He shared that in case of children particularly it’s much more debilitating because if a child doesn’t get adequate exposure to speak from birth and in initial few years, the child won’t be able to develop proper spoken language. He said that early intervention and treatment is very important.
Dr Gupta also shared about role Cochlear Implants can play in changing lives of children and people with hearing loss as it enables them to hear clearly and can be done for adults also who have developed acquired deafness.
He said SMVD Narayana Super-Speciality Hospital has completed more than 50 such surgeries over last few years and many of them have been bilateral surgeries which mean children can listen with both ears.
Total 137 patients benefited from this screening camp. They came all the way from areas like Udhampur, Ramnagar, Rajouri, Poonch, Akhnoor, Kathua, Billawar and even from the parts of Punjab. Few of them have sought support from Shrine Board for further treatment.
