JAMMU, June 5: An awareness camp was organized at Mela Kheer Bhawani in district Ganderbal of Kashmir by Dr Rakesh Thusoo, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, SMVDU and Co-ordinator of Cancer Genetics Research group.
Dr Rakesh along with his team, made aware the people about the dreaded disease of cancer. However, camp had a huge footfall of local and national visitors.
It is pertinent to mention that in this camp focus was laid on the healthy and active life style of people and how this disease can be kept at bay.
Ruchi Shah, DST woman scientist, apprised the people about the choice of food and its relation to the much prevalent Gastric cancer in valley and further advised the people to eat healthy and avoid processed foods including pickles and dry vegetables which are sun dried and is a local delicacy. The participants were also advised to limit their salty tea to 1-2 cups a day.
Amrita Bhat, Junior Research Fellow made people aware about the blood cancers. She said about how environmental factors and genetic can cause various cancers like leukemia, lung cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer. All the participants were told to resist from tobacco and smoke and how it can cause lung cancer.
In addition, a free testing of blood sugar and Lipid profile of participants were checked and volunteers Vickey Suri and Siddarth Kaul helped the organizers in that endeavour.
