LEH, Mar 2: Snow clearance operation across Zojila pass is in full swing under Project Vijayak and the teams of the Project are making good progress in opening the road beyond Drass while they have already crossed Minamarg.
“Project Vijayak is mandated to undertake snow clearance of over 600 Km of road stretch in Ladakh to open the lines of sustenance for troops and to provide succour to the local populace. Ladakh has remained cut off since December 10 last year after a heavy spell of early snowfall resulted in closure of Zojila,” a spokesman of the Project said.
He said other than the numerous critical military roads, the primary focus of snow clearance efforts of the Project is on the Zojila-Kargil-Leh (NH-1) road passing through the mighty Zojila pass. The motivated teams of Project Vijayak have made exceptional efforts since 14 February to ensure early opening of NH-1, he claimed and added that through coordinated efforts with Project Beacon from the other side, it is hoped that traffic on the NH-1 will be restored in a record time by the end of March this year inspite of heavy snow accumulation.
“In Zanskar region as well, teams of Project Vijayak are working towards opening up the road from Padam to Kilima, Padam to Shinkunla and from Wanla to Lingshed/Niraq across Singela. Early opening of these roads will facilitate recommencement of construction of the important Nimmu-Padam road (Zanskar Highway) and provide relief to the local population. All critical roads in the Indus, Nubra and Shyok valleys have already been opened to traffic,” the spokesman stated.
He said with the relentless efforts of BRO for early opening of roads in the region, economic activities are likely to resume soon this year in the newly formed UT, giving a boost to the development efforts of the administration.
