Snow, rain give respite to people

SRINAGAR, Jan 24: Light snow and rain in the North Kashmir gave relief to people from Wednesday’s bone chilling day temperature. Sun came out in Kashmir on Thursday while as the people living in Ladakh region continued to shiver with cold due to sub-zero maximum and minimum temperatures.
An official of the Meteorological Department said that Leh in the Ladakh region was the coldest place in the State with the minimum temperature of minus 20.4 degree Celsius while as the maximum temperature recorded at this place was 0.4 degree Celsius.
The official said that Kargil also in Ladakh division recorded the minimum temperature of minus 18.4 degree Celsius while as the maximum temperature was recorded as minus 1.0 degree Celsius. The official said that weather would be mainly dry over the State.
Pahalgam, the world famous health resort in South Kashmir, recorded the night temperature of minus 11.6 degree Celsius and was the coldest place in the Kashmir valley. The day temperature recorded at this place is 2.1 degree Celsius. Gulmarg, the world famous ski resort in North Kashmir recorded the minimum temperature of minus 10.6 degree Celsius.
Qazigund, the highway town in the South Kashmir recorded he night temperature of minus 6.4 degree Celsius while as the day temperature was recorded as 5.9 degree Celsius.
The day temperature in Srinagar, the summer capital of the State rose by 5.7 degree to settle at 6.7 degree Celsius while as the night temperature was recorded as minus 1.8 degree Celsius. Srinagar recorded the day temperature of 1.0 degree Celsius on Wednesday while as the minimum temperature was recorded as minus 3.2 degree Celsius.
Jammu, the winter capital of the State recorded the day temperature of 19.3 degree Celsius while as the night temperature was recorded as 4.4 degree Celsius. Kupwara in North Kashmir was hot than Srinagar and the other district headquarters with the maximum temperature of 7.4 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 0.9 degree Celsius.
Meanwhile, reports reaching here said that Gulmarg received 2.2 mm of rain while as Kupwara received 2.5 mm of rain/snow. Some of the higher reaches in the North Kashmir also received light snowfall while as the plains were hit by light rains. The light rain/snow gave some relief to the people from the bone chilling temperatures day and night temperatures.
In the meantime, traffic would ply from Kashmir to Jammu on Friday on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. In his communiqué, Inspector General of Police, Traffic Munir Khan has said that subject to fair weather conditions and good condition of road all kinds of vehicles would be allowed to travel from Kashmir side towards Jammu in a regulated manner on January 25.
