Snow yet to be cleared from Uri’s border village

Srinagar, Jan 27: Over a fortnight after the heaviest snowfall of the season, Churunda village of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district remains cut off due to non-clearance of snow from the approach road.
Churunda village is situated on the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Uri sector. This village is home to about 160 people who face extreme hardships during winters as the area remains covered with snow throughout the winter.
The residents of the area told Excelsior that the road leading to their area remains covered with a thick blanket of snow, causing multiple problems for them.
They said that the patients are the worst affected as they have to walk several kilometers to reach the hospital for treatment. “The patients especially the pregnant women have to wade through snow to reach the hospital as the roads remain under the snow. Even the ambulances cannot reach patients because of the non-clearance of roads. The administration seems to be unmoved by our problems,” Lal Din, a local from Churunda said, adding that getting essentials is an arduous task as they have to travel by foot in the bone-chilling cold.
They said the concerned department has failed to clear snow from the road despite multiple requests from the residents. “Last time the snow clearance was left midway for reasons better known to the officials,” another local said, adding that they appeal to the Lt. Governor, Manoj Sinha to look into the matter.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Ahsan Mir, told Excelsior that they would immediately ask the concerned officials to clear the road. “It is a border village and the terrain is really difficult, but we will make the road mortorable as soon as possible”, he said.
