Snowfall in hills, intermittent rains in Kashmir; temps plummet

Srinagar, 16 Apr: Kashmir valley was lashed by intermittent rains while hills received fresh snowfall today leading to drop in temperatures and forcing people to pull out woollen and use heating devices to keep themselves warm.
Intermittent rainfall continued throughout the day today in most parts of Kashmir even as higher reaches including Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Pir Ki Gali and Gurez valley received a fresh spell of light to moderate snowfall.
The rains and snowfall led to drop in temperatures across Kashmir with people preferring to stay indoors to avoid chill.
Srinagar city witnessed a maximum temperature of 13.2 degrees Celsius, around 8 degrees Celsius below normal for this time of the year.
In Gulmarg the maximum temperature settled at 3.5 degrees Celsius, 7 degrees Celsius below the average.
Kupwara recorded 10.9 degrees Celsius, Kokernag 14.6 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam 13.0 degrees Celsius and Qazigund 14.9 degrees Celsius as the day’s maximum temperatures which is several notches below normal for this time of the year.
Weatherman has said that the freak weather with intermittent rains will continue till 18th of April with light snowfall in the hills of Kashmir.
He said that another Western Disturbance is expected around 21 – 22 April followed by a weak one around 26 – 27 April.
The erratic weather has led to delay in the sowing of paddy and vegetables. The low temperatures has also caused loss to the orchardists.
