Affarwat peak at Gulmarg witnessed around one centimetre of snow today, while Sunshine peak reported a similar accumulation. Sonamarg’s higher reaches recorded around 2 cm of fresh snow. Sinthon Pass, Chhattergalla Pass, Paddri Pass on Bhaderwah- Chamba road besides Peer Ki Gali on Mughal Road also reported light snowfall during early hours.
The early snowfall has been welcomed by residents and visitors, signaling a potential early start to the tourist season.
According to Weather officials, the higher reaches above 4000 meters may receive a few more inches of snow if rain spells continue.
“We’re keeping an eye on the conditions. It’s not uncommon to see early snow in these regions, but with the rain in the forecast, some areas might see a more significant accumulation,” the official from the Meteorological department said.
The snowfall and rains come as a refreshing change following a period of dry weather.
Meanwhile, heavy rain during early morning hours in Jammu and its adjoining districts brought significant drop in temperature today. It also brought some relief from the hot weather during the day in Jammu for the people here.
During rain, the breakdown occurred in the 133/11 KV lines, which resulted in snapping of power supply in many parts of Jammu for about five hours. The power could be restored only around 11 am. A senior PDD officer said that due to some fault at Gladini Power Station, the power breakdown occurred and it was not some local fault.
