Social Media in our life

Sir,
This has reference to the writeup ‘Losing Friends on Social Media'(DE, Dec 23, 2018).It is said that excess of everything is bad and this can be applied more aptly to the excessive use of social media by the old and the young alike. One wonders how much addict people have become to social networking sites these days.It is funny as well as surprising to see the youth texting messages at the bus stop/railway station, while walking in the streets and lanes and even while crossing the roads oblivious of the fact that they can be crushed under the speeding wheels. The discussions about politics and other issues on the social sites sometimes causes bitterness even among the best friends.Sometimes unfounded rumours are spread through the social media, which can cause law and order problems. At home, the situation is no different.Children are seen glued to their mobiles in the morning, evening and even at night. They are unaware about what is happening around them or who is sitting in front of them.If a guest visits them, he/she feels ashamed as he/she is paid little attention by the hosts. This excessive use of the social media has had serious effects on the health of people. It is leading to loss of memory and sleep. The youth are living in the unreal and virtual world. They have thousands of friends on networking sites but few real friends. They fail to develop interpersonal and social skills which are so essential to live a successful and fuller life.Relations and physical exercise and games have taken a backseat. All this is resulting in poor health and other problems such as irritable behaviour and obesity in the youth. It is a known fact that the more an organ is used, the more it is developed.Unfortunately we are using our brain and body very less due to easy access to internet.Even for small mathematical operations such as multiplication and division and simple queries, we have no time to think and we use calculator and internet. It definitely affects the efficiency of our brain because the more we use it, the more efficient and strong it becomes.Gone are the days when people would recite the multiplication tables of one and a one fourth, one and a half, one and a three fourth etc.All this,if not checked, is bound to produce a generation of stupid people. The moral values too are vanishing fast. But they say no invention, by its own, is good or bad.It is its use which makes it so.So the parents must ensure that their children donot use social net working sites so much and so long that their studies and health are affected.
