Social organizations to launch Save Ranbir Canal movement

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Dec 7: Expressing their serious concern over polluting of Ranbir Canal the life line of Jammu, the activists of various social organizations today warned to launch a movement for Save Ranbir Canal.
A meeting of these social organisations was held here under the chairmanship of Ashok Singh Manhas former Corporator in which grave resentment was expressed over the diverting of all drainage water as well as flush water from various localities into the Ranbir Canal.
The meeting said that right from Akhnoor large number of cremation ghats and temples exist on the bank of the canal up to its tail and the ashes of the bachelors cremated on the canal ghats are even submerged in its water.
The meeting said the canal has lost its sanctity in view of diverting the drainage and flush water into it and under these circumstances performing last rites of the dead on its ghats or submerging of ashes into water is not religious.
Mr  Manhas said that a team of some social activists visited the canal right from its head works to tail to ascertain the facts and they were shocked to see that entire flush and drainage water is diverted into the canal from upper reaches.
He urged the authorities to take immediate steps in checking the pollution level of the canal failing which the people will be forced to launch agitation.
Dr K K Gupta of Save Ranbir Canal Committee, M L Bhat, K K Sharma, Mr Manhas and Mr Chib were among the activists of other social organizations who attended the meeting.
