SAMBA, Apr 4: An Army personnel allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle inside an Army camp in here today.

According to the officials, the incident took place this morning at around 11:35am, when one Makhan Lal, son of Ram Paul of Greater Kailash Jammu posted with the 6th JAKLI Army Unit at Border road Samba shot himself with his service rifle in the camp. After his colleagues heard the sound of gunshots they immediately rushed to the spot and saw him lying in a pool of blood. They immediately informed to the senior officers of the unit.
After getting the information, the senior officers of the unit reached on the spot and evacuated him to nearby medical facility where he was declared brought dead. After that the body of the deceased was brought to District Hospital Samba for autopsy. The motive behind his taking such an extreme step was not known immediately, the official said, adding inquest proceedings had been initiated.
The Samba Police has taken the cognizance the matter and started further investigations. The body has been handed over to army after autopsy for performing last rites.
