Sopore villagers demand clean water amid failed supply scheme

SRINAGAR, Feb 29: Residents of Wadoora village in north Kashmir’s Sopore area today alleged that the water supply scheme constructed in their area has failed to provide potable water.
The residents said the scheme, built at an estimated cost of around Rs 5 crore, has not met the water demands of the village. They have highlighted numerous leaks along the main pipeline designated for water distribution, which not only damage the road infrastructure but also pose a risk to public safety, hindering movement in the area.
“We had hoped for clean and uninterrupted water after years of scarcity, but instead, we are left with a system that leaks and brings in water from the drainage, further endangering our health,” a resident said.
Locals have stated that the pipeline was improperly laid alongside a drainage system, leading to contamination of the water supply with sewage water. Despite voicing their concerns to the authorities, their pleas for proper installation were overlooked.
“This situation is particularly disheartening for the villagers, who have endured water scarcity for over 15 years and had hoped for improvement with the implementation of the new scheme,” locals said.
Expressing their disappointment, the villagers emphasised the need for accountability in the execution of such projects. They questioned the efficacy of investing significant funds into schemes that fail to fulfil their intended purpose of providing clean and uninterrupted water access to the population.
Calling for swift action, the residents appealed to the LG administration and the officials of the Jal Jeevan Mission to intervene and conduct a thorough investigation into possible mismanagement during the construction of the scheme.
They demanded transparency and accountability to ensure that such crucial initiatives meet the needs of the community they serve. “No one from the department bothered to inspect the site before the pipeline was laid, and now we are left dealing with multiple leaks. It is a clear case of mismanagement, and we urge the LG administration to intervene and hold those responsible accountable,” the residents said.
