Economic activity in the country and in the State has increased manifold during past twenty years despite militancy having caused serious law and order situation. Population has increase, mobility has multiplied, and connectivity has become frequent and rapid. These are all indications of economic progress and we are happy to note that the State is in a mood of transformation from old to new and modern order.
But looking in retrospect, we find that our development has been lopsided. While economic progress is there and economic activity has increased manifold but the infrastructure needed to regularise this development is lagging behind. In particular good and wide roads, attractive and clean bus stands, efficient city and rural transport system and al matters pertaining to road traffic are not yet fully available. Even the Jammu bus stand presents obnoxious scenario. Likewise bus stands in smaller towns like Pulwama is in shambles. Five years ago, the project of a new bus stand in Pulwama was floated which when completed would reduce traffic snarls by more than forty percent
Unfortunately, in the case of Pulwama bus stand, rather in the case of most of the rural bus stands, there is lack of sense of responsibility among the concerned authorities. For one reason or the other the work on building of the bus stand is stalled and years roll by yet people are mired in problems. The traffic bottleneck in Pulwama is proving of great hazards and movement of buses is withheld for hours at end. We would like to alert the concerned authorities that bus stands in crucial localities of towns should be address immediately so that traffic congestion is relieved. There is no sense in delaying these matters whatsoever. Flyovers, subways, ring roads, widening of roads, clearing footpaths of encroachment, macadamizing of the roads, putting up electric sign boards etc. are some of the modern methods that have become common in upgraded cities and towns. These appliances are few and far between in our rural traffic management. Whenever government authorities are approached, the answer is that such and such a plan is underway and is withheld for want of release of funds and that it will be completed within a short time. But the short time protracts to months and years and decades. Authorities need to mount their attention towards this important issue.
