KOLKATA : Atletico de Kolkata’s dramatic semi-final triumph over Goa, secured after a nerve-racking second leg which ended in a 4-2 penalty shootout win for the visitors, left one veteran of high-pressure situations feeling thrilled at the success.
Kolkata co-owner and former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly was jubilant at his team’s progress to the first Hero Indian Super League final.
“It’s been great!” an exuberant Ganguly said of the journey to the final. “We fought and fought and we made it.” The cricketing icon admitted to feeling some pressure himself when the game went into extra time and then penalties. “In a tiebreaker, it could be anyone who goes through, so there was definitely some pressure!” Ganguly shared his thoughts on Kolkata’s opponents in the final, Kerala Blasters – which is co-owned by India teammate and fellow cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. “The final is against Kerala, so that’s a new game altogether,” Ganguly said in response to a question about whether his side could carry any momentum from their dramatic win. “I think they are a good team as well, so we’ll see.” The ‘Prince of Bengal’ did not want to put any added pressure on his team ahead of the final, saying that they should take a few moments to revel in their semi-final triumph. “Let’s enjoy this!” Ganguly emphasised. “There are two days to the final, so let’s get this out of our system. We’ll see what happens in the final when the day comes.” (AGENCIES)
