JAMMU, Feb 24: An awareness workshop on “Feasible technologies for processing of MSW in hilly areas and proposed amendment to draft Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Rules, 2015-reg” was organized by Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), Jammu, here today.
OP Sharma, Director Environment, Remote sensing and Forests was the chief guest on the occasion while Soujanya Sharma, Director, Urban Local Bodies, Jammu and ML Raina, Director Rural Development, Jammu were the special invitees.
The event started with the release of a Brochure on Solid Waste Management by adopting source segregation and composting practices published by J&K SPCB, Jammu.
OP Sharma appreciated the initiative taken by SPCB, Jammu to organize such workshop to ensure effective implementation of the MSW Rules in the State and awareness being carried out by J&K SPCB for sensitization of students in particular and other bulk waste generators to adopt source waste minimization practices. He requested all the stakeholders to comply with the said Rules at the earliest. He also emphasized that MSW management is at an infancy stage in J&K and State Government is keen to boost many MSW options including recycling facilities.
Shaukat Chowdhary, Regional Director, SPCB Jammu apprised the participants about the need to adopt integrated approach towards waste management in view of land constraint and lack of manpower. He said that there is a need to make awareness among all citizens to adopt waste segregation and on-site processing so as to achieve “Zero Waste” target and minimize the need of landfill sites. He asked the stakeholders to take strict action against for littering and burning of waste by the waste generators, so as to ensure effective collection and scientific disposal of the waste.
Soujanya Sharma talked about the operational Vermicomposting facilities in Jammu and steps being taken to update old DPRs and fresh DPRs being finalized in view of the upcoming amended MSW Rules. He said that they are shortly installing a composter at Katra.
ML Raina, Director Rural Development Department also talked about the initiatives being taken by Rural Development to achieve the targets set under Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
