Speaker to probe backdoor appointments

SRINAGAR, Oct 5: Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Mubarak Gul, today said that he will order an inquiry into the alleged backdoor appointments being made on the recommendations of Ministers and ruling party leaders if he gets any proof.
Gul asked the MLAs, who raised the issue of backdoor appointments in the Assembly to give proof about alleged backdoor appointments being made. “Give me proof about backdoor appointments, I will order an inquiry,” he assured the House.
Gul announced it after Opposition members alleged that despite ban, people are being appointed in different departments on the recommendations of Ministers and ruling party leaders.
The National Panthers Party leader in the House, Harshdev Singh said: “Despite a ban on engaging any daily wager, people are still being appointed on recommendations from Ministers.” He said in his constituency many appointments were made in different departments.
Singh demanded that action be taken against the Minister or those who are engaging these daily wagers at a time when others are being disengaged. He said that several departments and Development authorities are suffering for want of manpower.
Leader of the Opposition of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti said, “Backdoor appointments are going on in the State on political considerations.”
Mehbooba said retired employees have been re-engaged by this Government when there are lakhs of unemployed youths in the State. “Does the Government believe that we have no talent in the State and therefore retired personnel are re-engaged”? she asked.
The PDP leader said large numbers of retired employees have been re-employed on salary of over Rs 1.5 lakh. She demanded an end to it.
The other PDP members also alleged backdoor appointments in their respective areas. The Speaker said, “I will order an inquiry into backdoor appointments if any proof is provided.”
PDP member from Pahalgam Rafi Ahmad Mir alleged that more than 60 backdoor appointments were made in the Horticulture Department in his constituency.
BJP member Chaman Lal Gupta demanded that the backdoor appointments should be stopped immediately. He said: “We have orders of appointment issued on the recommendations of Minister.”
