Former Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court (retd) Justice G D Sharma presided over the seminar in which threadbare discussions were held on Article 370, which grants so called special status to the State.
Speakers were unanimous that Article 370 has caused more harm to the people of the State instead of giving any benefit. They were of the opinion that this Article was a psychological barrier between people of Jammu and Kashmir and rest of the country. Speakers also observed that Article 370 was anti-weaker sections, besides poor and marginalized sections were the worst sufferers of this Article
Initiating the discussion, eminent columnist Daya Sagar said that Article 370 is a barrier in the total constitutional integration of J&K with India. “There are some who advocate and contest that it is only through this Article that J&K is linked with India. These people simply brush aside the fact that all the States of India are linked with Union of India through articles of Constitution of India”, he added.
Prof Hari Om demanded abrogation of Article 370 and full constitutional integration of the State with the rest of India.
Prof Varinder Gupta, in his address, said that Article 370 gives special status only those who are already enjoying power. He said that this Article was main cause of discrimination with Jammu and Ladakh region. Dr Jatendra Singh, Surinder Ambardar and others also spoke on the occasion.
Justice G D Sharma in his concluding remarks also supported demand of the abrogation of Article 370. He said that this Article is harmful for the common masses of Jammu and Kashmir.
