NEW DELHI: Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to climb Everest, reckons that the ‘spirit of adventure’ should be the inherent quality in any person whether its for trekking down the world’s largest peak or for riding a camel for several days in a desert safari.
Pal, who is geared up to trek the Everest again, will be leading a six-women team’s expedition to Gokyo Everest Base camp, kicking off from March 26.
Addressing mediapersons, Pal, head of the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TASF), speaking on the qualities required by a mountaineer said,”Whether you have to ride a camel in a desert safari or climb the mountains, the ‘spirit of adventure’ should be the essential quality in anyone as none of the two jobs are easy.”
“Also, basic thing like risk-taking abilities, guts, love for the mountain and patience is necessary in them beside being calm on tough situation,” added she. The 62-year-old mountaineer will now be leading the women team to Gokyo base camp and after a week of ardous trek, the squad will reach Lukla. Pal has also included Hemant Gupta and Payo Murmu, both employees of Tata Steel, who will help her women team members to prepare for the rigorous trek.
Further talking on the expeditions, Pal said,”Everest has always represented the epitome of challenge of human endeavour, of leadership, of knowing one’s strengths and weakness, of being humble in one’s approach and of testing one’s capabilities.”
