SPMR College of Commerce organizes awareness program on Urban Farming

JAMMU, Sep 13: Institution Innovation Council of Government SPMR College of Commerce in collaboration with Umaaha Solutions Private Limited and J&K Science Technology and Innovation Council organized an awareness program on Urban Farming.
The program started with the lighting of lamp by the chief guest Dr Surinder Kumar (Principal of the College) and other dignitaries present on the occasion. This was followed by welcome address by Dr Nazia Rasool, convener, Innovation Cell.
Arvinder Singh Reen, Joint Director Input Agriculture Jammu, was the resource person for the event. He stressed upon the need of urban farming in today’s scenario when urbanization is spreading rapidly. He explained in detail the process of urban farming on the roofs and balconies of the buildings.
A documentary was also screened during the program to raise awareness about the ill effects of excessive use of pesticides on human health and environment. A total of 100 students attended the program and were excited to learn new mode of farming. They also enquired about the scope of urban farming as a career option.
Faculty members present on the occasion were Prof Barbara Kaul, Prof Savita Jamwal, Dr Monika Malhotra, Dr Sandhya Bharadwaj, Dr Shafkat Jahangir, Prof Deepshikha Sharma, and others.
The program was compered by Prof Reeta Menia and Divya Mahajan. The whole event was conducted and coordinated by Dr Parveen Singh (vice president IIC), Prof Ashu Manhas, Dr Nazia Rasool, Prof Monika Mahajan, Prof Shreya Sharma, Prof Charandeep Handa, Dr Deepak Pathania and Prof Anwar Ul Haq.
