SPO killed, cop injured in militant attack

SRINAGAR, May 15:  A Special Police Officer (SPO) was killed and a constable injured in a militant attack at Bijbehara in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district today while security forces launched massive searches in North Kashmir to flush out militants.
Militants fired indiscriminately at a police vehicle at Padshahibagh in Bijbehara area of Anantnag district this afternoon. Two policemen were injured and they were removed to nearby hospital where SPO Bilal Ahmad was declared as brought dead.
The other injured cop identified as Head Constable Abdul Rashid was referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment. His condition is stated to be stable.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and conducted searches to nab the assailants.

Meanwhile, a wreath-laying ceremony for the martyr Bilal Ahmad Shah son of Mohammad Abbas, who was killed in the line of duty, was held at District Police Lines Anantnag.
DIG Amit Kumar led the police and civil officers and officials in paying the floral tributes to Shah. SSP Anantnag, Altaf Ahmad Khan, DC Anantnag Mohammad Younis, SP Headquarters Anantnag Tahir Ashraf, senior Army and CRPF officers and jawans were among others who joined in paying tributes to Shah.
A police spokesman said Bilal Ahmad who was a native of Gani Gund Verinag is survived by an unmarried sister, aged parents and a grandmother.
In the meantime, security forces today launched massive search operation in Rafiabad area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Sources said that 32 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Rafiabad, today cordoned off Gunde Karim Khan in Watergam area of Rafiabad and adjacent forest area after frequent reports about militants movement in the area.
Security forces conducted house to house searches and fanned a large portion of the forests. However, no militants were found in the area and the operation was later called off but security forces are keeping a close eye in the area.
Another operation was launched this morning by security forces in Rajwar forests of North Kashmir’s Handwara area in Kupwara district this morning. Sources said that 21 RR of Army and Handwara police this morning cordoned off vast forest area in Rajwar as part of area domination ahead of summer when militants who infiltrate from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) are received in the area by reception parties of militants. The operation is still on.
