How did the Departmental Purchasing Committee of Jammu Province and the Purchasing Committee of Health and Medical Education Department pass the anti biotic drug for purchase by the State hospitals when the drug has been proved spurious after examination conducted in the laboratory on the behest of the State Drug Controller? Spurious anti biotic drug costing several crore rupees has been supplied to the hospitals and has been administered to the patients. This criminal act deserves condemnation. The Health Minister has taken quick action of filing FIR against the suppliers and the case is being processed in the court of law. But what is important is that it cannot be attributed to any oversight or mistake on the part of manufacturing company and the suppliers. There is a nexus and one cannot rule out the possibility of more drugs being supplied in the State as spurious. As such the Drug Control Department should conduct full survey of other important life saving drugs to ensure that there is no spurious item among them. The culprits of this serious crime should be given exemplary punishment so that such crimes are nipped in the bud.
