The State Government is pursuing an ambitious project of development of the old city of Srinagar. The project envisages turning the downtown into a national heritage monument maintaining its antiquity and historicity. This was reflected in the speech of the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Ali Mohammad Sagar, made at the inauguration of ropeway to Makhdum Sahib’s shrine. Besides restructuring the old part of the city on heritage pattern, the Government envisages road widening projects, construction of community halls and upgrading of various schools, and more bridges for better communication. Power supply will be augmented by formulating a comprehensive project worth Rs. 669 crores ensuring uninterrupted electric supply to consumers. Apart from providing more civic amenities to the citizens of Srinagar, the Government is also focusing on tourism component once downtown is brought on heritage pattern. It could become a source of generating economy as most of the visitors usually evince interest in the historicity of the city of Srinagar as well. Development of old city will give a boost to economic activity and open new avenues for employment and entrepreneurship to Kashmiri youth.
