Srinagar-Jammu highway put through after 6 days

SRINAGAR : Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, was resumed after remaining suspended for six days as a precautionary measure.
The highway was closed from August 10 as a precautionary measure because of curfew and tension in different parts of Jammu region, where August 9 communal clashes in Kishtwar left three people dead and property worth crores damaged.
However, since yesterday, the highway was closed due to landslides and shooting stones, triggered by heavy rains at different places.
A traffic police official said Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has pressed sophisticated machines and men into service to put through the road.
Machines remained deployed at different places to clear the landslides.
The vehicles, including those carrying passengers and empty trucks or loaded with fruits, which were stranded on this side of the Jawahar Tunnel were allowed to move towards Jammu this afternoon.
Similarly, vehicles carrying essentials from Jammu, were also allowed to move towards the valley.
However, there is one-way traffic at some places which were hit by landslides and shooting stones.
This is for the second time the highway was closed because of protests and tension during the past one month.
Last month, people protested at several places on the highway after four people were killed and several others were injured after BSF allegedly opened fire in Gool area of Ramban district. (AGENCIES)
