SRINAGAR:The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, has been closed due to land and mudslides, triggered by heavy rains.
A traffic police official told that the highway was closed due to landslides and mudslides at Seeri, Ramban and Gandroo. He said Border Roads Organisation ( BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has already pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway again.
Traffic could be restored later today if there are no fresh landslides, he said.
Large number of vehicles, including those carrying Amarnath pilgrims, and tourists and other passengers, are stranded on both sides of the highway.
Fresh traffic will be resumed only after the stranded vehicles will be cleared, official sources said.
However, traffic on historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir and Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region was normal, while the highway connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir was also through. (AGENCIES)
