SRINAGAR/JAMMU, May 1: The mercury has started soaring in Kashmir valley as Srinagar recorded hottest day of the season today but the Meteorological Department has predicted three day wet spell starting from May 3.
A MeT official told Excelsior that the day temperature in summer capital here today crossed 28 degree Celsius for the first time in this season and thus is the highest so far. He said the maximum temperature was recorded 28.1 degree Celsius in Srinagar against 27.6 on Saturday. The night temperature settled at 9.4 degree Celsius.
Due to bright Sunshine here today, the people removed warm garments and instead put cotton and other light garments. The people were also seen drinking soft drinks, juice and eating ice-creams to keep themselves cool. The Sunday flea market also witnessed a good rush with people buying cool garments for the summer season.
The day temperature also increased in other parts of the Valley. According to MeT official, Qazigund, recorded 27.5 degree Celsius maximum temperature while minimum temperature settled at 6.8 degree Celsius.
Pahalgam, which serves as Base Camp for annual Amarnath pilgrimage, recorded 24.7 degree Celsius day temperature and night temperature settled at 3.9 degree Celsius. The MeT official said maximum temperature in Gulmarg, a star skiing destination, was recorded 18.2 degree Celsius while the night temperature settled at 6.8 degree Celsius.
Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded 26.3 degree Celsius maximum temperature and 9.5 degree Celsius minimum temperature. The day temperature in Kupwara settled at 28.4 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature remained 6.9 degree Celsius. Leh, which is also called cold desert, recorded a 20.9 degree Celsius maximum temperature and in neighbouring Kargil, the maximum temperature was recorded 20.1 degree Celsius.
The MeT official said that there is prediction of rains for three days starting on May 3. “The widespread rains are expected to lash on Valley on May 4 and fairly widespread on May 3. The scattered rainfall is expected on May 5,” the official added.
Meanwhile, Jammu today witnessed another hot day as the maximum temperature was recorded over 40 degrees Celsius.
”Though temperature in the recent past remained normal and dipped on some days but today, it was season’s maximum 40.9 degree Celsius,” the weatherman said. He said the temperature will soar in the coming days. The minimum temperature was registered at 22.0 degrees C.
Yesterday, the maximum temperature was 39.6 degrees C and the minimum 21.4 degree C. In the past one week, the maximum temperature recorded here was between 36.0 degrees and 37 degrees C. Being the weekend, people preferred to stay indoors to avoid direct contact with sunlight.
