Srinagar records coldest night with minus 3, freezing taps

SRINAGAR :  The summer capital, Srinagar, witnessed the coldest night of the winter so far after the minimum temperature dropped to minus 3 degree in the absence of any strong Western Disturbance (WD).
However, there is a possibility of some brief relief tomorrow as light WD is developing which could cause light rain or snow at isolated places over higher reachs in the Jammu and Kashmir.
There would be no large change during the subsequent two days, a Met department spokesman said here this  afternoon.
People in Leh at minus 12.6 degree and Kargil minus 8.4 degree in Ladakh region continued to shiver as the minimum temperature remained below freezing point while Pahalgam, the health resort in Kashmir was coldest with minus 5.2 degree.
Srinagar continued to shiver as there was no repite from the cold because of further drop in the minimum temperature. It was minus 3 degree, coldest of the season so far, freezing taps at several places, particularly in the outskirts, affecting water supply. However, taps defreezes as the day progressed.
Pahalgam, health resort in south Kashmir also recorded coldest night with minus 5.2 degree minimum temperature.
However, Gulmarg, a world famous ski resort in north Kashmir, where the minimum temperature was recorded minus 2 degree, two notches above normal was warmer than  Srinagar.
Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, also recorded coldest night of the season when the minimum temperature dipped to minus 3.8 degree, about three notches below normal.
Kupwara with minus 3 degree and Kokernag minus 2.1 degree also witnessed below normal temperature. (AGENCIES)
