The protestors, mostly women, gathered at Nawakadal Square in the old city, causing traffic disruptions that lasted for hours. They expressed worries about the financial implications of the smart meters, fearing that the resulting hefty bills would further strain their already tight household budgets and threaten their very survival.
The protestors highlighted that a majority of households in their locality belonged to lower-income groups. They lamented that the majority of the area’s youth worked as salesmen or roadside vendors and would be unable to afford the increased expenses generated by the smart meters. “Most of the people here are poor and cannot bear the burden of hefty bills. We would rather face dire consequences than allow the installation of smart meters in our area,” one woman said.
