Srinagar shivers at -6.2

Srinagar, Dec 20: Night temperatures across Kashmir improved marginally today due to partial cloud cover although the cold wave continued unabated across the region.
Despite the marginal improvement in minimum temperatures, intense cold wave gripped the Valley today.
Parts of Dal Lake in Srinagar city was frozen today making rowing of boats difficult in parts of the lake.
The weatherman has forecast light rain or snow in Kashmir on Tuesday.
Srinagar recorded minus 6.2 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature today showing marginal improvement over yesterday’s minus 6.6 degrees Celsius.
Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded minus 7.7 and minus 7.5 degrees Celsius respectively again showing improvement over yesterday’s minus 9.5 degrees Celsius and minus 9.2 degrees Celsius.
Leh town was at minus 17.0 degrees Celsius, Kargil minus 20.0 degrees Celsius and Drass minus 27.3 degrees Celsius.
The 40-day-long period of harsh winter cold known locally as the ‘Chillai Kalan’ begins tomorrow and will end on January 31. During this period temperatures mostly remain sub-zero.
And a team of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) today rescued passengers stuck in snowstorm on Razdan Pass on Gurez-Bandipora road.
Two Sumo cabs carrying passengers were on way to Gurez when a snowstorm hit the highway at high altitude Razdan Pass. A team of Beacon personnel rushed along with necessary equipment for rescue operation.
The team first shifted the stranded passengers to safer places and then the two cabs stuck in the snow were taken out safely without any damage.
The snow storm had hit the highway with high speed and the vehicles were stuck deep into the snow. It needed lot of efforts and expertise to rescue passengers and safely remove vehicles. All the passengers and vehicles were safely brought back to Bandipora.
