The SRTC Bridge or the old bridge in Baramulla that connected the old and the new town collapsed in the middle and has become unserviceable. Authorities had declared this bridge unsafe for pedestrians much earlier but people ignored the warning and continued to cross over it. Fortunately, there were no pedestrians on the bridge when it collapsed in the centre. This was an old bridge and the floods of 2014 had damaged it beyond repair. It is a freak of chance that there was no loss of human life. It could have been disastrous. However, it should be a lesson to learn that nobody should try to walk over a bridge that has been declared unsafe for the pedestrians.
Now that the bridge has collapsed and the connectivity between the two parts of the town has been lost, it is important that the R&B immediately draws the plan of building a new and modern bridge at its place which will be spacious with two-way transport facility. It has to be the life line for the strategic town of Baramulla. We appeal the Public Works Department to take immediate steps of drawing the plan for construction of a new bridge on the site.
