SSP posted in Muzaffarnagar during riots suspended

LUCKNOW :  Uttar Pradesh government today suspended the then Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Muzaffarnagar Subhash Chandra Dubey with immediate effect. According to official sources here today, SSP Mr Dubey, who has now been transferred and attached with the DGP office, has been put on suspension. The sources said that this is the beginning of action being taken against the officials in the Muzaffarnagar violence. The suspension of the SSP was the first action against the official. The suspension comes in the wake of the visit of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to riot-hit Muzaffarnagar and Shamli district today. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi are expected to visit Muzaffarnagar tomorrow.

A government statement here today said that a department probe has been ordered against Mr Dubey and a showcause notice has been served to him seeking explanation that why he did not act to stop the violence.

Interestingly, Mr Dubey was posted at Muzaffarnagar after the August 27 incident in which three youths were killed and later triggered the violence after two maha-panchayats of August 31 and September 7.

Mr Dubey took the place of Manjil Saini who was in Muzaffarnagar during the initial murders at Kawal village on August 27.

He was removed from the post of SSP on September 9 and now Praveen Kumar Rai has been made the SSP of Muzaffarnagar. (AGENCIES)
