JAMMU, Oct 16: Amid ongoing construction and widening work on the National Highway (NHW) and increased festival season traffic, SSP Traffic Rural Jammu, Vinay Kumar, has urged the public to consider alternative transport options to avoid severe congestion.
Kumar recommended using public transport, carpooling, and other alternatives to reduce traffic jams at crowded locations on NHW and other key areas during this busy period.
He highlighted that improper parking, particularly at high-traffic spots, is a major issue, obstructing emergency services and disrupting overall traffic flow.
As part of efforts to improve parking discipline, Traffic Rural Jammu has booked over 12,878 violators this year. In total, 116,153 challans have been issued, with fines amounting to Rs 11.35 crore.
The SSP advised the public to use designated parking areas and avoid blocking access points.
“In the absence of available parking, vehicles should be parked without impeding traffic,” he emphasized.
Another concern highlighted by Kumar is the public’s frequent disregard for road signs, which contributes to both traffic disruptions and accidents.
He urged strict adherence to speed limits, parking restrictions, and overtaking rules to prevent mishaps and ensure smoother traffic flow.
The SSP Traffic Rural Jammu also pointed to the issue of footpath encroachments by hawkers and shopkeepers, particularly during the festive season, which creates traffic hazards and increases the risk of accidents.
He appealed to vendors to avoid occupying walkways, forcing pedestrians onto busy roads.
Additionally, the SSP noted that over 60,000 pending challans from 2022 and 2023 are still awaiting resolution in various courts.
He urged violators to clear outstanding fines to avoid legal action, adding that assistance is available through the E-challaning Section at Traffic Rural, Jammu.
