State Cabinet orders replacement of CRPF by police at Gagran

 

SRINAGAR: Expressing grave concern over the recent incidents of violence in south Kashmir, the State Cabinet today ordered replacement of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) by State police at Gagran, allegedly responsible for the killing of four people on September 7 and another, yesterday.

An official spokesman said the State Cabinet which met here under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grave concern over the recent incidents of violence in Shopian.

It also took stock of the investigation by the police into the incident of firing on September 7 at Gagran, Shopian, and noted with dismay that there was no clarity on the facts of the case even after five days of the incident.

The Cabinet directed the Police authorities to determine the facts of the case, including the identity of the so far un-identified deceased person, within the next 48 hours.

A Judicial enquiry, to be conducted by a sitting judge of the High Court, may be ordered, thereafter, in case the facts are not established.

The Director General of Police was also directed to replace the CRPF personnel at the Gagran Camp with a contingent of the J&K Armed Police (JKAP).

Resident of Gagran have been observing complete shut down since September 7, demanding removal of of CRPF camp from the area.

Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has urged Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinda to remove the CRPF camp from the Gagran. (AGENCIES)
