Delay in the construction of the State Cancer Institute at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences at Srinagar has been viewed seriously by the State High Court whereby the Director has been asked to file a detailed report with details of timeline and the progress of construction. The construction being in ‘advanced stage’ as pleaded, however, could not satisfy the court.
It may be recalled that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India had approved setting up of a cancer institute with an estimated cost of Rs.120 crore. This was done under Tertiary Cancer Scheme of National Programme for Prevention and control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases and stroke etc. It is not known as to why the Institute has not come up so far despite adequate financial support from the Central Government. What is needed is strengthening of Tertiary Care of Cancer as provided by the Government of India, meticulously and facilities like operation theatres etc provided for which the building must come up at an early date.
